Fluid-Structure Interactions: Cross-Flow-Induced Instabilities

Michael Paidoussis, Stuart Price, Emmanuel de Langre, "Fluid-Structure Interactions: Cross-Flow-Induced Instabilities"
English | 2010-12-13 | ISBN: 0521119421 | 412 pages | PDF | 5.6 mb

Structures in contact with fluid flow, whether natural or man-made, are inevitably subject to flow-induced forces and flow-induced vibration: from plant leaves to traffic signs and to more substantial structures, such as bridge decks and heat exchanger tubes. Under certain conditions the vibration may be self-excited, and it is usually referred to as an instability. These instabilities and, more specifically, the conditions under which they arise are of great importance to designers and operators of the systems concerned because of the significant potential to cause damage in the short term. Such flow-induced instabilities are the subject of this book. In particular, the flow-induced instabilities treated in this book are associated with cross-flow, that is, flow normal to the long axis of the structure. The book treats a specific set of problems that are fundamentally and technologically important: galloping, vortex-shedding oscillations under lock-in conditions, and rain-and-wind-induced vibrations, among others. The emphasis throughout is on providing a physical description of the phenomena that is as clear and up-to-date as possible.

Rethinking Documentary

Rethinking Documentary By Thomas Austin, Wilma de Jong
Publisher: Op..en Uni..vers..ity Pre..ss 2008 | 376 Pages | ISBN: 0335221920 , 0335221912 | PDF | 6 MB

From a boom in theatrical features to footage posted on websites such as YouTube and Google Video, the early years of the 21st century have witnessed significant changes in the technological, commercial, aesthetic, political, and social dimensions of documentaries on film, television and the web. In response to these rapid developments, this book rethinks the notion of documentary, in terms of theory, practice and object/s of study.Drawing together 26 original essays from scholars and practitioners, it critically assesses ideas and constructions of documentary and, where necessary, proposes new tools and arguments with which to examine this complex and shifting terrain. Covering a range of media output, the book is divided into four sections: critical perspectives on documentary forms and concepts; the changing faces of documentary production; contemporary documentary - borders, neighbours and disputed territories; and, digital and online documentaries - opportunities and limitations. "Rethinking Documentary" is valuable reading for scholars and students working in documentary theory and practice, film studies, and media studies.

Virtual Immersive and 3D Learning Spaces: Emerging Technologies and Trends

Shalin Hai-Jew, "Virtual Immersive and 3D Learning Spaces: Emerging Technologies and Trends"
English | 2010-09-30 | ISBN: 1616928255 | 413 pages | PDF | 28.7 mb

Immersive learning has grown in popularity with the development of open-source immersive 3D learning spaces. Those in e-learning have been working to find ways to capitalize on immersive learning through simulations, digital kiosks, live virtual events, live interactivity, instructor-facilitated learning, AI-driven robots, and hyper-realistic experiences. Virtual Immersive and 3D Learning Spaces: Emerging Technologies helps push the conceptual and applied boundaries of virtual immersive learning. Virtual immersive spaces bring with them plenty of promise, of sensory information-rich learning experiences that will enable a much wider range of experiential learning and trainingdelivered to computer desktops, augmented reality spaces, digital installations, and mobile projective devices. This work explains how these spaces may be exploited for effective learning in terms of the technologies, pedagogical strategies, and directions.
