LEGO is much more than just a toy—it's a way of life. The Cult of LEGO® takes you on a thrilling illustrated tour of the LEGO community and its creations. You'll meet LEGO fans from all walks of life, like professional artist Nathan Sawaya, brick filmmaker David Pagano, the enigmatic Ego Leonard, and the many devoted AFOLs (adult fans of LEGO) who spend countless hours building their masterpieces.

In this full-color coffee table book, you'll find page after page of photos showcasing the fantastically creative and complex models built by the LEGO community. You'll marvel at a life-size stegosaurus, a microscale Yankee Stadium, a 22-foot long World War II battleship, a MINDSTORMS-powered monster chess set, and a remote- controlled Jawa Sandcrawler (with moving conveyor belt!). Visit the conventions where LEGO fans gather to socialize and show off their work. And discover the serious side of LEGO, used in therapy, prototyping, and teambuilding.

Whether you're a card-carrying AFOL or just thinking fondly about that dusty box of LEGO in storage, John Baichtal and Joe Meno's magnificent look at the world of LEGO will inspire you to take out your bricks and build something amazing.

This book is about all the fears we have, from momentary panic and anxiety, up to the biggest terrors we may face about our life and our death. It is also about the fundamental sources of fear and anxiety, which affect all of us. The author presents

practical advice, but not quick fixes. He is trying to help us fundamentally transform our lives and our perceptions so that we can conquer fear, not simply suppress it for a time. To become truly fearless, he suggests, we must stop running from our fear and begin to make friends with it. We must learn to smile at fear. This is a critical part of the conquest.

Best articles from 5 years of The Skeptical Inquirer.

Thirty-eight articles by 34 different authors covering a wide range of paranormal subjects: parapsychology; ESP 'research'; astrology; UFOs; fringe archaeology; creationism; & cryptozoology.

A rich source of critical examination of wild claims. This collection of critical essays and investigative reports examines virtually every area of fringe science and the paranormal from a refreshingly scientific and clear-minded viewpoint. The authors are noted scientists, philosophers, psychologists, and writers. All bring to the task a determination to sift sense from nonsense and fact from fiction in an area notorious for misinformation, misperception, self-delusion, and wishful thinking. They do so in a way that highlights the differences between real science and pseudoscience. They've made special efforts first to find the actual facts behind numerous claims that have popular appeal, and then to explain and communicate what scientific investigation and reasoning reveal about them. Subjects treated to incisive and entertaining examination include astrology, ESP, psychic detectives, psychic predictions, parapsychology, remote-viewing, UFOs, creationism, the Shroud of Turin, coincidences, cult archaeology, palmistry and fringe medicine. There are also explorations of the implications of paranormal beliefs for science education.

Effective Parameters of Hydrogeological Models

Vikenti Gorokhovski, "Effective Parameters of Hydrogeological Models"
S,..er | 2012 | ISBN: 3642237215 | 168 pages | PDF | 3,8 MB

Models of geological objects are tools for interpolation and extrapolation of available data in space and time continuously. Real structures of the objects are unknown, and their models and simulated results carry uncertainty which cannot be evaluated in a provable way. The real issue is obtaining effective predictions in a reasonably defined sense. This requires a knowledge of mechanisms that convert actual geological properties into effective model parameters. These mechanisms are introduced in the book. They reveal that effective parameters are not statistics but characteristics optimizing the system made up by geological surroundings, their models, predictive problem formulations, including mathematical models of the simulated processes, boundary conditions, monitoring networks, criteria of efficiency and even by time. Examples of evaluating and applying transformation for assigning effective parameters and solving inverse problems are presented.
