Mars, in 2170 - after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla, the previous games in the series, it took 50 years. Then the resistance forces and their allies succeeded in maintaining its freedom and to establish the world peace and tranquility. But they lasted long. As a result of man-made disaster live on the surface of Mars was more impossible, and the colonists had to move to the only safe place - underground caves.

The protagonist of the game - Mason Darius (Darius Mason), grandson Alex Mason - a key character's Red Faction: Guerrilla.
