FOR DECADES, BRITAIN led the world in aviation — and, even though the UK does not build much in the way of complete aircraft any more, the country's aerospace industry remains its second-biggest manufacturing employer. That industry is nowadays more concerned with engines, equipment and parts, which, although world class and profitable, inevitably do not generate quite the same sense of wonder as the first flight of a complete new prototype!
