Jean Maurice Eugene Clement Cocteau (5 July 1889 – 11 October 1963) was a French poet, novelist, dramatist, designer, playwright, artist and filmmaker. His circle of associates, friends and lovers included Kenneth Anger, Pablo Picasso, Jean Hugo, Jean Marais, Henri Bernstein, Marlene Dietrich, Coco Chanel, Erik Satie, Maria Felix, Edith Piaf and Raymond Radiguet.

Jean Cocteau reminisces about the people he has known throughout his long life in this fascinating documentary by Edgardo Cozarinsky. Starting with still photographs of Satie, Diaghilev, Nijinsky and Stravinsky just before the outbreak of World War one, Cocteau evokes the heady atmosphere of experimentation that was prevalent in Europe, in the Twenties.

There are scenes from many of his films. He was a master of in camera special effects techniques, especially the famous ending of Les Parents Terribles, with the jerky dolly shot, which had to be improvised. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane with an artist who knew everybody. I wish I could just show you his films, but as site rules would have it, it's not learning material unless they chop it up and someone is talking over all the best parts.

Although Cocteau denied being a Surrealist or being in any way attached to the movement, he was an important exponent of avant-garde art, and Cocteau had a great influence on the work of others,

Like many gifted artists whose talent falls short of genius, Cocteau did not feel drawn to one art form above all others. Instead he utilized all the media available to him to create a complex personal mythology which mixed imagery and text, poetry and prose, fact and fiction,
